Why have a BODMAS rule at all, you might ask? Well, it isn’t always advantageous to write lots of brackets in your mathematical commands, especially if you are writing computer code, where efficiency is everything. So an order of precedence is a natural step to take to impose some order into potentially ambiguous commands. That’s not to say that it isn’t a controversial subject, as we shall see.
